Indochina Highlights: Vietnam & Cambodia

A family of four reached out after following my own travels in Vietnam. They wanted something similar but with Cambodia included, and were clear about one dream element from the start: finishing with a stay at Four Seasons Resort The Nam Hai in Hoi An.

I created a tailor‑made Vietnam and Cambodia itinerary that started in Ho Chi Minh City, with time to explore the city and a full‑day tour of the Mekong Delta by boat. It gave them an immediate feel for Southern Vietnam’s energy and life on the river, with all the logistics taken care of so they could simply enjoy it together.

From there, they flew on to Phnom Penh for a short stay and a guided city tour taking in the main historic and cultural sights, before continuing north to Siem Reap. Here, a full day with a private guide at Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom and Ta Prohm brought the temples to life for both adults and teens, and made the most of their limited time.

Back in Vietnam, they moved on to Hanoi, with an evening street‑food tour to help them navigate the Old Quarter’s maze of alleys and tiny restaurants like locals. From Hanoi, they travelled out to Halong Bay for an overnight cruise amongst the limestone karsts: a slower, more tranquil interlude with time for kayaking, swimming and watching the sunset from the deck before returning to the city.

For the finale, they flew down to Hoi An and checked into Four Seasons Resort The Nam Hai. This was always intended to be the highlight: a serene beachfront setting just outside Hoi An, exceptional service and the ideal place to slow down after a busy itinerary. A Vietnamese cooking class in Hoi An added a hands‑on experience the whole family could enjoy before they ended the trip with uninterrupted beach time.

Behind the scenes there were several airline schedule changes while we were planning, which meant reworking parts of the routing. I protected their key experiences and used the changes as an opportunity to extend their stay at Four Seasons The Nam Hai, so they finished with even more time at the resort they had been dreaming about from the beginning.

Throughout, they also had my trusted team on the ground in Vietnam and Cambodia to meet them on arrival, coordinate local guides and drivers and smooth out any small issues, so everything ran seamlessly from one stop to the next.

With multi‑stop flights, private transfers, guided days in Saigon, Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Hanoi, an overnight Halong Bay cruise, on‑the‑ground support and a luxury beach finale at Four Seasons The Nam Hai all tied together, this Vietnam and Cambodia journey shows how I can build a family itinerary around one or two “dream” stays and still keep everything running smoothly when flights and schedules change.
