California Road Trip

A family of four wanted to experience the very best of California in one carefully planned trip: time in the cities, a classic coastal drive, theme park magic and space to relax together.
I designed a bespoke self‑drive journey starting in San Francisco and finishing in Napa, taking in Fisherman’s Wharf, Santa Cruz, Carmel, Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, Yosemite and wine country, and bringing together some of California’s most iconic stops in one considered itinerary. Direct flights into and out of San Francisco, car hire including child seats and a welcome bottle of wine waiting in their first hotel room set the tone from the moment they arrived.
In San Francisco, a stay close to Fisherman’s Wharf and a 2‑Day Hop‑On Hop‑Off & Alcatraz ticket made it easy to explore the city’s highlights without worrying about logistics. From there, they followed the Pacific Coast south via Santa Cruz, Carmel and Santa Barbara, with handpicked coastal hotels that suited a family of four and gave time for beaches, ocean views and relaxed evenings.
The adventure continued in Los Angeles, staying close to the theme parks. A 2‑Day Disneyland California Hopper ticket with Lightning Lane access meant maximum time on the rides and minimal queueing, creating those big family memories without the usual theme park stress.
To finish, the pace slowed as they headed inland to a lodge near Yosemite for hiking, viewpoints and starry skies, before rounding off the trip among the vineyards at a resort in Napa Valley, where the adults could enjoy California wine while the children made the most of the facilities, prior to flying home from San Francisco.
With international flights, car hire (including car seats), multi‑stop accommodation, key attractions, Lightning Lane passes and thoughtful touches like the in‑room wine all coordinated, this itinerary brought together the best of California in one seamless family adventure.
